The KinderDomBauhütte & KinderDomusMerseburch
The KinderDomBauhütte introduces children and young people to the fascinating world of 13th century building workshops. They slip into the role of a stonemason, glazier or master builder and embark on an exciting search for clues in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each project includes a customised exploration of Naumburg or Merseburg Cathedral as well as a creative part in the KinderDomBauhütte, where children can make their own workpieces. The children experience the harmony of art, architecture and religion in the Middle Ages in a vivid and exciting way.
Selection of offers and projects:
Botany in stone
The west rood screen of Naumburg Cathedral is covered with the most beautiful leaf ornaments of the Middle Ages. Oak, vine and fig thrive on the columns almost as if they were alive. The Naumburg master's inspiration - the plants of the Saale-Unstrut region - can also be found in the cathedral garden. In the greenery, the children can compare the sculptures with the living models and recognise the interplay between nature and art. We also want to try out the precise work of the sculptors ourselves: In the tradition of the builders' huts, we will work in medieval garb with chisels, rasps and files and make a leaf relief from aerated concrete stone according to our own sketches.
Heavenly light
The brightly coloured windows of Naumburg Cathedral show the high level of skill of medieval glass craftsmen. Through them, we recognise the importance of light in Gothic cathedrals. The pupils explore the interplay of light, colour and geometry and then create their own piece of heavenly light as a souvenir. In the glass workshop, they cut, break and grind the luminous glass and quickly learn how much dexterity is required even for small glass works.
Secrets of the parchment
In the Middle Ages, texts were mainly written down on parchment. The writing material made from animal skins was very valuable and mainly reserved for religious texts. As part of the cathedral tour, the pupils are familiarised with medieval scripts and their production. Afterwards, each participant makes their own small notebook with a customised cover and can try out writing with a real goose feather.
Adorn yourself like a donor
Uta and Ekkehard, Hermann and Reglindis - they are among the famous founder figures in Naumburg's west choir. During the cathedral tour, we take a close look at all 12 life-size figures! What do they tell us about the time in which they lived? Do they differ in their clothing, their posture or even their jewellery? With some magic foil and a little creativity, it's easy to make your own little showpiece modelled on the jewellery of the founders.
Altar workshop. Cranach vs. modernism
Reglindis has a good reason to smile - after almost 500 years, the altar of the Virgin Mary has returned to the centre of the west choir. What Lucas Cranach the Elder created in the Middle Ages, the artist Michael Triegel has added today. Details with great impact bring modernity and Christian tradition to life. From the history of the altar to the significance of the saints, there are all kinds of exciting stories to discover about the altar.
With patience, even a small altar modelled on Cranach's is made and a centrepiece is added with creativity.
Discover the cathedral towers from on high
If you want to see the city from a completely different perspective and are also fit for heights, this is the place for you! You have to climb over 200 steps to reach the north-west tower of the cathedral. But that's not all! Before the fantastic view makes up for any effort, towers have to be measured and small tasks solved. At the end of the project, the brave "high-altitude hikers" are awarded a tower diploma.
